BIGGEST MISTAKES Actors Make On Social Media
If you wouldn't do it in person...don't do it on the internet. Social media can help you network, build relationships, advance your acting career, but when used incorrectly it can make you look foolish, unprofessional, and thirsty.
I'm Jazelle, I'm an acting coach in NYC as well as an actor, and I know what it's like to start a career in this industry, and I just want to help you make it a little bit easier.
Don’t vent too much
It's always interesting to watch someone crash and burn or just share what they are going through. But doing it too often creates too much negativity, it makes you look negative and makes it seem like your favorite pastime is...well...complaining. If you want to share something you are going through, try to spin it as a learning lesson.
Talk about what you are for and not what you are against
The world is a messy place and we know that. Instead of screaming about how terrible things rejoice in the positive. At least on social media, remember your future employer is watching!
Industry Folks
Most people don't have a problem with answering a quick question or giving a bit of advice. But can you imagine how many people want that from the movers & shakers in this industry? They don't you directly sending them unsolicited clips or resumes, it's just not the place. Don't send DMs to industry professionals. Unless they are asking for DMs, just don't. What are you sending that you couldn't send an email about? If they wouldn't answer your email, they don't want your DM. Please... fall back, don't be that guy.
Know when you are allowed to post
Don't break contracts or rules, trying to win on Social Media. Depending on the project, you can't always share behind the scenes content. Know the rules and follow them, it's not worth it!
Don't buy followers
They don't care, especially if they aren't engaging with you. 10% engagement from your followers is a good number. Don't get overwhelmed by the numbers of followers, it matters... yes, but your craft matters more.
Don't Spam
No one wants to see, 5 posts at one time - schedule it! Or just calm down and wait to post. Look, social media is like a big party, go in knowing to introduce yourself, start conversations, be a good guest. Don't run in shouting about all the great things you are doing and leave without connecting with anyone.
Alright, that's all the tips I have for you today. If there was one that really stood out to you, or if you do something I didn't mention here, let me know in the comments. I would love to share all of my secrets with you, and I don't want you to miss a beat. Give me your email address and I will make sure you don't!
As always, wishing you love light & all that jazz.
